Toons In History: Disney in the Wartimes

This week's discussion of historical brings us to the man who created some of the most iconic cartoons in the world. That is of course, Walt Disney. i don't think there is anyone who has not owe a great deal of their childhood of to this man. Heck, my nephew's crib is full of Winnie the pooh and he's only 6 months old. Disney's has a special place in everyone's heart for the things he did with the moving cartoon. that is why when the war times of World War 2 happened, Disney used those same Disney Characters that drive across  sense of patriotism to the people of America. I have to admit that when i first came across these cartoons, I was a little bit put off, but i took it for what is was: EDUCATION. like many of the cartoonist of this particular time, they wanted to have their voice be heard about a very crucial time in history. just like the previous blog, some of these clips are banned from most television scheduling rotations and may contain some images and language that can be considered offensive.

in 1942, one of the first of these Disney cartoons was "Der Fuehrer's Face" was released to the general public.  it features Donald Duck as an officer of the Nazi officer. He is assigned to make auxiliary shells for the Third Reich. The cartoon depicts the world in which Donald inhabited as a crazy, chaotic, and dismal work environment. as he works and works to please "Der Fuehrer" poor Donald goes into a work induced stress frenzy. by the end of the cartoon, we find out that the whole ordeal as a dream and Donald Duck wakes up as a proud American citizen.  The cartoon is based on a song written by Musician Spike Jones with the same name. in the same year, another Disney wartime cartoon was created. "Donald Gets Drafted
,like the title suggests, is about Donald Duck getting drafted into the U.S. Army and his antics while going through Basic training.

with the war efforts increasing for the American, this 1943 Disney cartoon "The Spirit of '43" showed their audience the importance of paying your U.S. Taxes. Donald is torn between spending his money on a night on the town or putting it aside to buy savings bonds and pay taxes. i believe that this cartoon can somewhat serve as a public service announcement.

and in 1944, one of the last cartoons that Disney make for the war effort is one called "Commando Duck" . he is parachuted into enemy territory and  wipe out an entire Japanese militia.

these cartoons definitely made an impression on the american population. most of these shorts won Oscars for Best Animated film. Other Disney characters that were used to get the word out about the War included Mickey Mouse, Bambi, Pluto, and the rest of the Disney gang. everyone did their parts with the fight against the Axis even the cartoons.

Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Bosom Buddies

this week's top 5 was specifically requested by a friend of mine (Get it...NO?)

anyway it was requested by Caitlin of Music with Cait she's the girl to go to if you wanna know about the latest in popular music and concerts. this week is all about Best Friends.

5. Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble
ah yes, when it comes to best friends, these were the first to come to mind. the adventures and mishaps these two get into are legend (wait for it)...dary (10pts if you get the reference). what I like most about these two is that it took the best of both worlds. realistic and yet still have that good old cartoon crazy that Hanna-Barbera is known for.

4. Arthur Reed and Buster Baxter
I think that the television show, Arthur , is one of the best examples of adapting a children's book into animated series. as a child, i had quite a fondness for this show and how they portrayed these two. Arthur and Buster are just really great together and have something in common with our number 3 in this list.

3.Doug Funnie and Skeeter Valentine
I dare you not to agree with me on this. I always wanted to hang out with these two. Doug's crazy imagination and Skeeter's all around coolness made this pair hard to beet (and yes i meant to spell it like that) what the television show Doug and Arthur share is that they both had the same writer. Disney's Doug pays homage to this in the episode Doug's Last Birthday

2. Scooby Doo and Shaggy
Nothing is more satisfying than a boy and his dog, so it's only natural that the Silver goes to these two crime solving duo. The Mystery Machine would just be 3 moody teenager without Scooby and Shaggy. I mean, anyone who can eat as much as these two deserves to be on this list.

1. Phineas and Ferb (and also Perry)
Phineas and Ferb takes the win for this week. the show ,in general, is a fun adventure with so many memorable episode. i think the Phineas and Ferb remind me of the way i use to hang out with my older brother.

Round The World Wednesday: Shin-Chan

here's another one of my oh-so Favorite "international" Cartoons to watch from time to time. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you the Comedy that is Shin-Chan. This is by far one of the funniest anime i have seen since Samurai Pizza Cats (look it up, sap).

this show centers around the Nohara Family  pictured above. you have Mitzi, the stay at home mom who takes care of her family. Hiro, The hardworking breadwinner, their cut little bundle of joy, Hima and Shin, the lovable  little toddler with a spark for adventure.

PLEASE!!!

Shin Chan is a unapologetic, politically incorrect, Chuckle fest. there isn't a episode where Shin doesn't pull down his pants and performs the (pardon my french) Ass Dance for everyone. The Dad is basically a lackey in a large corporation, Mitzi's saving up money for a boob job, and Hima lusts after boy bands, THAT'S RIGHT, THE BABY IS LUSTING AFTER BOY BANDS. I haven't even fully dived into the series. you will just have to take my word when i say that Shin Chan is that kind of childish show that let's you unleash your inner child.

this show have multiple dubs in various different languages including: French, Spanish, Hindi, Tagalog, Portuguese, and obviously Japanese. I think that everyone should check this show out but it's not for the first time anime watcher. hmm? I wonder if Please! Anime Blog Creator, Gaby would agree.

Toons in History: Popeye and World War 2

welcome to the first of many post conveying some of the most prominent cartoons that had a significant influence on American history, but before I do that i wanted to give a special birthday shoutout...TO MYSELF

AND ALSO TO ONE MR. DEVEN FULTON BY LINKING YOU TO HIS  AWESOMELY TECH SAVVY BLOG GEEKSPEAK . IF YOUR LOOKING FOR THE LATEST IN TECH AND NERD NEWS, FOLLOW NOW!!!!!!

NOW THAT THAT'S OUT OF THE WAY

The name "Popeye" is synonymous with everything that is manliness, perseverance, and spinach. He have won himself in the hearts of many kids with his strong anchor arms (the original...not spongebob),  his cheerful banter, and always beating up anyone getting in the way of him romancing the love of his life, Olive Oyl, but Popeye, along with other famous cartoons of that era, had there say in the events of the time. the noticeable of those times is World War 2. I will warn you that some of the clip and cartoons i'll show in this blog are banned and uses some images and language that may be considered offensive.

before I show those lets get some of Popeye's History out of the way. The first recorded appearance of Popeye was in January 17, 1929 in the comic strip known as Thimble Theatre.

Four years later, the lovable sailor was picked up by Fleischer Studio where he debuted along side one of their more popular series, Betty Boop.  Not only did it feature Popeye, Olive Oyl, but it premiered Popeye's Arch Nemesis, Bluto

Throughout the years, Popeye have definitely made an impact on the American youth. According to the website http://www.retrojunk.com/details_tvshows/1910-popeye-the-sailor, a poll was taken in the mid 1930s and it was proven that Popeye was more popular than Mickey Mouse. Popeye the Sailor Man went on to have over 100 episodes, 3 double feature matinee and adoring fans in the form of  "The Popeye Club" rivaling that of the Mickey Mouse Club. unfortunately, when the WW2 came around Popeye was reenlisted  to help the home front from the attacks of the Japanese.

"Your a Sap, Mr. Jap" was one of many Propaganda cartoons that features Popeye. This particular episode shows Popeye protecting an American navel fleet from a Japanese attack. the cartoon conveyed the Japanese Soldiers as incompetent, cowardly and physically appalling whereas the Americans were portrayed as strong and brave.

"Seein' Red, White, and Blue" shows Popeye battling it out Bluto, but for a different matter. Popeye is in charge of the Draft Board and Bluto is trying to do whatever it take so get out of serving the Country.

"Spinach Fer Britain" is about Popeye's journey to delivery spinach to Britain while the same time defending the rations from the pressing attacks of the U-boats of the Nazis. all three of these cartoons were pulled from commercial viewing on television.

although these messages can be perceived as being very strong negatively, these cartoons were meant to instill a sense of patriotism in the world against the axis power. Popeye became the face of a strong America.

THIS SHOW IS SUPERIOR IN  EVERY WHICH WAY POSSIBLE. HEY ARNOLD TOUCHED ON A LOT OF VERY MATURE SUBJECTS. REMEMBER THE EPISODE WHEN MR.NGUYEN HAD TO GIVE UP HIS DAUGHTER, OR WHAT ABOUT WHEN ARNOLD'S GRANDPA THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA DIE. I'M NOT EVEN GONNA MENTION THE FATE OF ARNOLD'S PARENTS.

Dueling Thursday: Ed,Edd, and Eddy VS. Hey Arnold!

It time to duel!!!!

OUR TWO COMBATANTS

Here's how this is going to work:  I am gonna put up two of the most popular episodes of the both series and i will critique them on plot, theme, and overall entertainment. and after I watch them i will give my take and them choose which one of these two wins the battle. you guys's can watch along and comment whether or not you agree or disagree with my choice for the winner.

First up: Ed, Edd, and Eddy

NEXT: Hey Arnold!
unfortunately, youtube doesn't have any episodes of hey arnold. But click the  kitteh to for a link to another site that happens to have the episode. only watch  "Downtown as Fruits"

I didn't really plan it, but these are both the very first episodes of their series so they had a responsibility to grab the audience's attention. Now, let's see how the weight out against each other

Ed,Edd and Eddy:  "Pop Goes the Ed" was always the first episode i remembered when someone mentioned this show. it starts with the Eds failing at one of their plans to get rich as bee exterminators. the three finds themselves being chased by thousands of bees. they nearly escape the bee stings, and by "they" I mean just Eddy. After giving up on that plan, the Eds were in dire need to get away from the heat. they fought heat behind tree, against a house and even inside a freezer. losing hope, the trio seek refuge in the sandbox when all of a sudden they get wind of a sprinkler party that they are not invited to, so of course  they try to go. their several antics and shenanigans led for a quite embarrassing moment.

Hey Arnold: This truly brings me back to the 90s. "Downtown as Fruits" lays out the framework of the whole series in front of the audience in a way that makes you want to watch more. The episode introduces the entire PS 118 classmates helping Helga with her play about the food groups. Helga, being her charming and dainty self, rule the rehearsal with an iron fist...literally. fed up with their treatment Arnold and Gerald decides to take a detour from the opening of the play, and where they end up is an adventure.

and now MY DECISION.....

the winner

is........... GONNA BE CHOSEN TOMORROW!!!!!!! MUAHAHA

Round the World Wednesday: Ranma 1/2

This week's Round the World Wednesday is devoted to one of my favorite anime, Ranma 1/2. Now, I know that this blog isn't exactly anime focused, in fact if you looking for anime Check out this cool blog
Please! Anime  .

Getting back on the topic, Ranma 1/2 is one of those insanely fun and kooky anime that you are probably going to deny loving. and since this blog is devoted to the insanely fun and kooky it has a home in the Toon Capsule.

This anime stars Ranma Saotome, the title character of this cartoon. he and his father, Genma are the sole practitioners of the Saotome School of Anything Goes Martial Arts. The Two set off to train all over the world in any style of martial arts. after traversing the various different terrains, the two finds themselves in the Rural China to train at one of China's most Sacred and Dangerous battlegrounds, Jusenkyo the Cursed  Springs. suspended on bamboo stalks, the battle it out atop these seemingly harmless hot springs. a couple of punches and swift kicks later, Genma bested his son by knocking him into the  one of the cursed springs. you see, the hot spring that poor Ramna fell into was known as  the Spring of the Drowned Girl. if anyone were to fall into the one of the cursed springs, they turn into the animals that drowned into it's particular spring. the once, black haired young man has transformed into a red headed young girl. the father, after receive a vengeful strike from his now daughter, landed into the Spring of Drowned Panda.

After parting ways from the Cursed Springs, the two makes their way to the Japan for there toughest mission yet. the young Ramna has been linked at birth to an arranged marriage. how will his betrothed the fact that he is now a She?

the "lucky" lady that is Ranma's bride is Akane Tendo, the youngest daughter of Soun Tendo , Genma's former training partner, and if you wanna know how these two act and react to each other you have to watch the anime or read the manga (cough MangaModish Cough)

all in all, this anime has a special place in my heart and my hard drive.

FINAL VERDICT:  A+

SEE YOU TOMORROW, TOONHEADS
STAY TOONED ;P

Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Super Smartypants

The Topic of this week's Top 5 is: TOP 5 SUPER SMARTYPANTS. Cartoons are known for showcasing brilliant minds and geniuses. i mean, look at anything on TV nowadays and you can go without seeing a glasses-wearing-briefcase-having wunderkind outwitting even his or her teacher. this list is my short list of those who fit this criteria.

5. Wile E. Coyote
I don't know when it happened but all of a sudden Mr.Coyote got some book learning and became (how he modestly puts it) A SUPER GENIUS.  within a few short years he changed route from the road runner and set his eyes on Bugs Bunny. I like to think that he went on to teach at some fancy ivy league university on the side. either way, my grades aren't good enough :(

 4. Twilight Sparkle
If you don't know who this charming young filly is... then congratulations you have been living under a rock that probably doesn't have any internet access. This is Twilight Sparkle, one of the six main characters of the hit show My little Pony: Friendship is Magic (see, i told you that you were gonna see these ponies). if you follow the show, you will know that she is the voice of logic among her friends. her friends include, a talking baby dragon, a flying horse that talks to animals, and a magical overlord (10pts if you can name who i am talking about).

3. Susan and Mary Test
if you know me personally, you know that I DESPISE Johnny Test and everything that comes from that show, but you can't ignore the fact that these two are without a doubt the most innovative of the geniuses of this list. i mean, these two have the time to build particle beams, transporters, time machines, and even ACTUAL SMARTYPANTS while at the same time swoon over a total douchebag (gill).Teenage girls will be teenage girls I guess, but i do commend these twins on their time management skills.

2. Jimmy Neutron
This week's Silver medal goes to one of my favorite cartoons in the early 2000's. Jimmy is the epitome of the word "Genius" Don't believe me look at the title of the show. What I liked most about Jimmy is that you could believe that he's a Genius. I enjoyed watching the entire series and was sadden to find out that this series never had a proper finale. also, my roommate totally looks like sheen.

1. Dexter
like the ancient stories say "one genius to rule them all". if you were a child of the 90's, you could not go a day without tuning into cartoon network and watching Dexter's lab. This show set the precedent for all these other shows that features the mentally gifted. Dexter is the original "Baby Genius" or third grader. I never knew how old Dexter was.

Honorable Mentions: Jean Grey, Professor X, Beast
And now the Comic fan boys will kill me. Look, i know that the X-men are very exceptional when it comes to the brain, but I wanted this list to feature more of the cartoony side of smarts. less mind meld, more BRAIN BLAST!!!
